Bridge bearings
Natural Rubber bearing generally consists or interleaving layers of rubber bonded sandwich fashion to steel plates. The whole unit is covered with rubber to afford weather protection.

A bridge basically consists of bridge deck supported by piers. In order to avoid over stressing and damage by movements of vehicle and loading to the piers, bridge bearings are used to accommodate these movements so as to reduce the reaction forces and bending movement to within the safety limits of structure. Natural Rubber is an ideal engineering material for bridge bearings as it is highly elastic and sufficiently soft to accommodate these movements without transmitting harmful stress and also it can absorb and isolate energies from impacts and vibrations.

Bridge Bearing Pads for Infrastructure Construction

Types of  bridge bearing pads
1)PLAIN ELASTOMERIC PADS are used in locations with limited load capacity and thermal movement. They are manufactured from neoprene, natural rubber or polyurethane and are usually cut from large sheets of rubber or are individually molded to any required shape.

2)STEEL-LAMINATED ELASTOMERIC BEARINGS the most commonly used bearings in bridges, are preferred due to their versatility and lack of required maintenance.
These pads are manufactured from alternating layers of neoprene or natural rubber and steel sheets and are molded under heat and pressure (vulcanization process) into one unit. During vulcanization, the steel laminates are permanently bonded to the rubber.
3)THE PTFE SLIDE TYPE, is adding a PTFE sheet on top.
PTFE slide bearings are used to solve the problems of movement caused by temperature change and differential material thermal expansion, settlement and natural forces encountered by high winds and even seismic activity.

4)When attachment to a structure is necessary, STEEL REINFORCED ELASTOMERIC BEARINGS WITH EXTERNAL PLATES are ideal. The vulcanized bond of the external load plates to the laminated bearing is an excellent way to ensure the bearing stays in place over many temperature and live-load cycles. External plates, known as sole plates, load plates or bearing plates can be tapered to match the slope of the bridge and are commonly welded to the girder and anchored with bolts.
External plates may be galvanized, painted, painted with zinc primer or left bare.
